I like to work with anxiety as a cue to take a deeper look at ourselves with both curiosity and compassion.
I have been working with a man struggling to manage anxiety and panic but exhausting his coping strategies. When we looked deeper, he needed to mourn the loss of a significant relationship rather than run from the pain. Curiosity and compassion sprinkled with some acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and expressive arts therapy did the trick!
He is now actively enjoying his life and much more capable of noticing and tolerating the anxiety that comes up. Not all anxiety resolves in this way but an attitude of curiosity and compassion rather than fear and self-judgement can go along way to easing the pain and distress of anxiousness and panic.
